‘round the corner belts always mystify me...

Why, it’s almost as if you’re saying a crankcase auto would be a complete and total nightmare requiring far too much engineering work for completely pointless result.

...would be the right answer. BLMC did just that with the Mini but Peugeot said “non”. Correctly so as demand in France for automatics in the 1970s would have been minuscule (it’s not much more now!). The 304 was replaced by the 305 which retained its gears in the sump until Peugeot redesigned it to accept end-on gearboxes. Only then did it get a ZF automatic and a five speed manual.
